Join us Friday, July 18th for Compton’s Table Queer Open Mic here at 1020 Collective!

It will be a special night of community, creativity, and self-expression - open to all queer musicians, dancers, poets, writers, and performers ready to share their talents.

Doors open at 6pm and the mic stays hot until 10pm. Whether you’re performing or cheering from the crowd, this is a night you won’t want to miss.

Join us for our monthly Collective Community event Thursday, July 17th from 6-10pm! This month, we will be joined by a selection of artists in the Motherhood exhibition for an artist talk!

Meditative Mondays take place every 2nd and 4th Monday of the month. Led by psychic medium Stevie T., each session features a guided meditation created intentionally for that specific day and the people who are present. It’s a space to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with yourself and whatever you need in that moment.

Sessions will last up to an hour, and entry is on a sliding scale from $5–$20. You’re welcome to bring your own yoga mat, a pillow for extra comfort, and some water (though we’ll have some here too). Come as you are, and make time for yourself in a space made for just that.

Since the next First Friday falls on the 4th of July, we will be having our First Friday celebration at The Bastion in collaboration with André Jones’ Summertime Fine 2025 Art Show & Kickback!

Vanni The Designer will be DJing, The Que Abides will be on deck for the food, and André Jones himself will be providing the art. And yes, there will of course be DANCING!

Join us for Gallery Night here at 1020 Collective! We will be celebrating the receptions for 2 of our current exhibitions: Motherhood, a group exhibition and Dissolves, a solo exhibition by Dan Schank.

Motherhood (in our second floor gallery) delves into the layered, intimate, and powerful realities of motherhood as seen through the eyes of a diverse group of artists. From new moms to seasoned mothers, each artist reflects on their unique journey through deeply personal and thought-provoking work.

Dissolves (in our first floor gallery) is a solo exhibition by Dan Schank that features watercolor works inspired by the cinematic technique of the cross dissolve, symbolizing psychological and cultural transitions across time. Drawing on imagery from the Human Potential Movement and mid-century media, the Dan reflects on the shift from collective transformation to individualized self-growth. The paintings explore the psychological tone of three distinct eras: the introspective 1950s, the self-focused 1970s, and today’s fractured, conspiratorial climate.

Both exhibitions will be up and on view today through July 27th.

Sneak preview performance of Laurelann Porter’s new solo performance piece “Sympathy for Exú”

"Sympathy for Exú" (encountering the trickster at the crossroads of cowboy culture and Brazilian tourism)

In June, Laurelann Porter and her creative partner Mike Anderson will perform their brand new performance piece, “Sympathy for Exú,” at the Hazeltine Theatre in Prescott, AZ. In anticipation, Rhythm and Flavor Productions, in partnership with the 1020 Collective, are offering a sneak preview of this performance.

WHY: Because, as the Jogo do Exú reminds us: the game is never what you think it is.

A provocative journey through the intersection of culture, identity, tourism, and privilege, this performance riffs off of and adapts The Rolling Stones' classic with a bold exploration of Brazil's vibrant traditions and the deep complexities of syncretic connections in a so-called tropical paradise. Created by Laurelann Porter in collaboration with Mestre Monza Calabar, Sympathy for Exú challenges Western assumptions about leisure, travel, and cultural exchange through an ethnographic lens.

Part performance, part ethnography, and told through a series of intimate moments - ranging from personal anecdotes of travel misadventures to the rhythm-filled beats of Bahia—this music-infused performance invites you into a world where the trickster Exú tells us the deeper truths through his game of lies. This piece will leave you reflecting on your own blind spots, your privilege, and your place within the global tourism market. Because, as the Jogo do Exú reminds us: the game is never what you think it is.
